Burlap Ruffles

So last week I said I would be doing a project with this piece of burlap:

Now I'm ready to share what it is. When Ma and Pat T. were in town they helped with some great projects including the ones seen here, here and here, but there was more that I haven't shared yet. I'll start by updating you on those. Jetty and Pa T. helped install some shelving in our laundry/storage room that is making a huge difference in that space. 

This shelf is holding all the containers that were previously stacked on the floor. Leaving room for our bikes!

...above the washer dryer. (Remember I mentioned I wanted it here?)

Well this is where the burlap comes in. Originally I thought about a striped fabric and even found some dollar store fabric that could work, but when I started to work on it the cream colour looked a bit too yellow and it just wasn't working in the space. I took a trip to trusty Fabricville and found burlap on sale 30% off, plus I am a member so had another 10% off. I got a meter of it for about $6.

I wanted to cover the gap between the washer/dryer and the shelf. I didn't want to just hang the fabric from it though, I wanted it a bit frilly. I wasn't sure how to work with burlap to do this, but I just starting pinning and came up with this:

After I cut the fabric to size and then sewed it in a big long line (About double the length of the space I wanted to cover) I pinned by tucking two small edges in like so:

Which I then sewed in place...

Then I had to figure out the best way to attach it. I went to buy Velcro that I could attach to the shelf and the material, but then I realized that I wouldn't be able to easily remove it from the shelf, and also Velcro is expensive!
Instead, in came my favourite decorating tool, my trusty 3M tabs.

 I sewed about 8 of these along the top of the skirt and then attached it!

It makes a huge difference and I love it!  Now I just need some baskets and glass jars to hold my laundry things on the shelf and it will be perfect.
