Cloth Diapering the Simple Way

I have had a few people ask me about my cloth diapering experience. When I was considering cloth diapering I read lots of different articles that said all kinds of things about how, which brand to use and how many you need. I found most of them made it sound like a lot of work. I thought I would share my experience in case it was helpful to anyone because I'm finding it super easy.

I currently have 18 Kawaii Diapers. They are my go-to diapers. I also have two gifted Fuzzi Buns diapers (not pictured) that I use. That brings my total to 20 diapers and I think that it just the right number. It is enough to last me a couple of days and not so many that I leave them sitting for too long before cleaning. Of course all babies need diaper changes at different frequencies so I would recommend having two and a half days worth.

I chose Kawaii mostly because of the price. They are about 1/2 to 1/3 the price of most cloth diapers. I was worried at first that this might make them less durable but they still look just about as good as the day I bought them. They each come with two inserts and I'm just starting to need to stuff them with both to keep Elias dry.

I have some regular all-in-one diapers...

...a couple overnight ones and some bamboo ones. I like having a few bamboo ones because they are a bit more breathable. The regular ones seem to be slightly less absorbent so they don't need as much work to keep them clean (more below). I've had only one leak with any of these unless I don't change him on time and then he can end up a bit wet outside the diaper.

They can also all be resized and used until he is potty trained with just a few snaps on the outside.

I really don't make it complicated at all. I keep a wet bag with me when I'm out and a pail with a lid and a wet bag liner at home. I throw wet diapers in the pail and "soiled diapers" I shake off into the toilet (no scraping) and dump in the pail. Every couple of days I throw both of the wet bags and diapers in the wash (like shove them in there-no touching) and do a large cold rinse, then an "extra heavy" wash and sometimes another rinse (usually not) and then toss them in the dryer or hang them on the line. I don't even pull the liners out of the diapers. They come out in the spin cycle of the rinse (Bonus! No dirty diaper touching!).

I use baby face cloths as wipes (we were gifted a lot of them) and toss them in the pail too.

For detergent I use Shaklee Laundry Detergent. It's fragrance free, natural and non-toxic so I don't have to worry about residue on his little bum! I barely have to use any in the wash because it's concentrated and when I need an extra boost to whiten them up a bit (if they are looking a little bit stained) I use the Shaklee Nature Bright Laundry Booster. It's bleach free, natural and biodegradable- woo! I also sun them to bleach them which works amazingly well.

Of course for a diaper cream I use Shaklee as well. Elias has pretty much never had a diaper rash but I use it whenever he looks a bit red and it makes it go away by the next change. (The other item you see below is the Shaklee Baby Moisture Cream- I love it so much that I always steal a little for my hands when I use it for Eli.)

I have found cloth diapering to be so simple, Jetty is even on board which I wasn't sure would happen. Do you cloth diaper? Any tips or tricks? I'm also happy to answer any questions in the comments!

  1. I sewed up about 20 newborn size cloth nappies before my youngest was born. She was a chubber and they didn't last very long. Suddenly not having the time to sew I got some cheap ones off ebay (they look much like yours) and they did the trick just as well. We use disposables now I'm working full time but they still fit if we're in a pinch!

    1. Wow! You made some? That's awesome! I wish I could do that! They are hard to use when working full time for sure, but I'm sure it saved some money for a while. :)
